Batik

Things you'll need

*1 lb. of clear paraffin waxes
*water based pens, pencils or crayons
*paper towels
*old newspapers
*electric skillets
*latex gloves
*coffee can or pan
*old towels
*iron
*fabric- cotton works best
*clothespins
*paintbrushes
*batik dyes or ink

Step 1

Wash and dry fabric to remove any sizing before you batik.

Step 2

Start with the cotton fabric because it works best. You can cut up old sheets to learn with.

Step 3

Draw your design on your fabric with the pens(water base), pencils or crayons.

Step 4

Make the double boiler with the can and electric skillet.

Step 5

Melt the wax in your can or pan with the double boiler.

Step 6

Paint over the design, make sure the wax penetrates the fabric. You should be able to see it on the back.

Step 7

Reminder. Everywhere the wax goes, there will be no dye.

Step 8

Let wax cool. You can put it the freezer to make it go faster.

Step 9

Crumble fabric to create cracks in the wax after the wax has cooled.

Step10

Put on the gloves.

Step11

Prepare dyes as suggested by the manufacturer. Cool dyes work best so they won't melt the wax.

Step12

Dye material the first color.

Step 13

Rinse in cool water to remove excess dye. If the color is not dark enough , dye again.

Step 14

Let it dry by hanging by clothespins.

Step 15

Take the hot wax and paint the areas that you want to remain the same color as first color.

Step 16

Let the wax cool.

Step 17

Crumple the fabric again to make cracks in wax.

Step 18

Dye the material the second color.

Step 19

Remove the wax, either by scraping off or ironing it between two pieces if paper. The paper will absorb the wax. This can be done while the fabric is still wet.
